Walking from Mill Beck or Bay.

Note that the climb from the beach to Ravenscar is very steep! A round trip can be made by returning along the cliff top path. The site of Low Peak Alum Works (NZ 97275 02192) can be visited and the remains of Stoupe Alum Works (NZ 95933 03155 private land) can be been seen where the cliff path meet the road. Below the works there are the remains of an old harbour blasted from scaur (NZ 97358 02425). This was used to supply urine, kelp, coal and brush woods used in the manufacture of alum.

The Scaurs

On a low tide a large area of scaur is exposed. Near the cliff and between the scaurs there is a lot of loose material to be inspected. Semi-precious stones, pebbles of Gneiss from the Highland of Scotland, Vein Quartz and Carboniferouse Coral are to be found here.

Coral

The most common fossil is probably Gryphaea known locally as devils toe nails. Some examples are riddled with holes. Near to Peak many small pyratised bivalves and the odd small ammonite, sections of Pinna Folium and the large bivalve Pholadomya Lirata can be found.

Large partial ammonites can be seen in the scaurs.

The Cliff

The cliff climbs from 40m near Stoupe Beck to 170m at Raven Hall.

From Stoupe Beck to Peter White Cliff is of boulder clay, and then the Lias is exposed. Keep away from verticle sections of the cliff.
